What are Brittlenesses?
RCS’s experience diagnosing, and re-engineering flawed decision support systems has provided us the opportunity to observe patterns of flaws, and those common, generalizable flaws in JCSs aimed at intelligence analysis. We call these brittlenesses. Brittlenesses are hidden flaws in the JCS which cause breakdowns in decision-making under cognitive pressure, and thereby reduce the overall rigor of the analytic pursuit. In other words, if an analyst is not adequately supported by their tools and workflows throughout the analytic pursuit, then their analytic decision-making will suffer, and the rigor of the pursuit is at risk.
